Southern Utah received its nickname "Color Country" from the beautiful reds and golds of the surrounding hills and neighboring national parks such as Bryce Canyon and Zion. Visitors are awed by the scenic vistas and colorful, exotic rock formations that are unique to this area. Located in the heart of this country, Cedar City is at an elevation of 5,623 feet. In 1851, it was originally settled by Mormon pioneers who hoped to start an iron industry. Although it was never as successful as was hoped, many ranchers and other settlers were drawn to the area.

Besides the famous national parks and scenery, tourists are also drawn here for the popular Utah Shakespearean Festival held each summer from July through September. Southern Utah University campus hosts the Utah Summer Games each June and hundreds of amateur athletes compete here. Brian Head Ski Resort offers exceptional winter skiing and snowmobiling with a base elevation of 9,700 feet, and recently the cool air and abundant trails through Cedar Mountain's alpine meadows have attracted many summer mountain bikers to "Color Country."
